Service Description

In this two-day workshop, each two hours long, we explore a fun clay process that creates dimensional imagery of your design onto a cup by employing the water etching method. This is when you paint a resist pattern onto the pottery, allowing the resist to dry, and then wiping clay away with a damp sponge. As the surface is wiped, a raised pattern forms under the resist. Because the surface needs to be leather hard on the vessel, we have pre-staged professionally thrown cups for you to choose and will cure them to their proper stage. We can help you make your own cup, or you can choose from professionally-thrown porcelain cups made just for this class. VALUABLE SKILLS UNLOCKED: Intaglio via water etching, impasto, composition and design, surface treatment, clay texture, underglaze staining After the cup dries, it will be fired for your second session, at which time you will decide how to apply color to the piece with several possibilities. We will show you a wipe-out technique to make your images pop. We work with porcelain clay for a durable, high-fire piece that is fully functional and a great conversation piece you'll love making. Our art coaches will fire a glaze your vessel with a clear glaze after you color it with underglaze ("paint"), if desired. If another final glaze color is desired, please enroll in the glazing class to complete the piece; it is not, however, necessary to achieve our targeted effect. Work is available for pick-up after adequate drying and firing time, generally within three weeks. Attendees will be notified when the pieces are ready.
